Art & Design - Moving “Carp-Pet”: A Magical, Waterless Fish Tank

Designer John Leung, who calls himself and his designs “illusive x ingenious x magical,” recently won the 2011 RedDot design award “Best of the Best” for his “Magic Carp-pet Rug”.

This is a much sought after award, coveted by many in this competitive international market. Winners of the world’s largest and most distinguished product competition can expect world-renowned recognition, having proven that their design is of irrefutable quality. What made his design a winner?

This special rug, viewed through a special glass coffee table, appears to the eye to have carp “swimming” in it. Using the moire effect, which is a perceptual trick seen when two different sets of lines or dots are layered on top of each other, Leung has created a “magic” fish tank of sorts. His “Carp-pet” really does seem to be “illusive x ingenious x magical” because it encourages us to save water by having an artificial fish tank, makes a pun of the word carpet with carp (fish), and combines those concepts with the fact that carp’s mythological meaning is bravery and fortune.
